I decided to make a reservation and try Pearl.

I called and they said there was seafood and pasta on the menu.

including bouillabaisse

which was excellent

along with the dessert

and the owner an chef

who had every table filled by 7:30, and people waiting outside.

Good thing I made a reservation.

Our new little Pearl already had a big following.

I'm late by about 15 minutes.

What a difference that makes in the morning.

The Pancake House is faithfully open at dawn

Venture Photography is such a cool place.

I first noticed it last year on my walks as it was getting built

in the place where the bath shop was next to Starbucks.

When the contractor told me it was to be a photography studio

I was pretty surprised.

What surprised me even more is the exceptional, fun experience a photo session here can be.

We had a family shoot in the summer before my daughter left for college.

They tell you to bring your favorite things.

"What kind of things?" I asked.

I was told- "see those front doors? We chose this place so we could get a horse in here."

Well, if they could get a horse in, then they could get my husband's Vespa scooter in..

and if they could his Vespa in, then they could get my Vino in...

The photos are extraordinary.

It's a real AdVenture

Just how many hours have the lights burned of the 100 needed?

They were on full blast last night

and you could clearly see the entire field.
I asked my daughter who was with me about the turf field
and she said it is great for running.
Evidently you can worry less about spraining your ankle
and can expect the field to dry faster after flooding.
...great on the sports side, says the Track Team member
but no so great on the environmental side
says the Environmental Club member.

It was more dramatic yesterday because it was a dark dreary day

and you could really see those lights blazing

I join with the residents

objecting to having bright lights and sports

There will be school today

I realize the tracks I see are going in opposite directons

and are probably the same

My little friends had a hard night

as I tried to brush off the snow

I realized it was ice and that the delicate petals were frozen

THE Ridgewood Runner approaches the corner

but the traffic prevents me from getting closer to get a better shot.

I saw her twice earlier this week on the same morning.

When I called to her she indicated 3 times-

-doing the loop 3 times-

she must be training for a marathon

I saw the lights from afar

the 100 hour burn has started

I understand the passion of the Stevens Road community

and their objection to these lights

that will burn into the night

and shine into their homes

Even on this morning the lights add a glow to the field

...which is as clean as it will ever be today

Is the High School losing its charm with these artifical enhancments?

Graydon Pool, the 4th of July Parade and Hillman Electric.

100 years ago in Ridgewood the town was HOT!

It is a pleasure to know that Hillman Electric is still

around 100 years later.

We wish you 100 more!

On Sunday night I saw the owner of this new shop standing back on the sidewalk

admiring the window.

there it was- the name at last!

He was very charming, and I welcomed him and wished him luck

but had no time for more

....as the light changed and forced me to move.

It is another very dark Monday morning.
There is a little mist in the air as I walk with my daughter on blackened streets to the High School.
It is 5:50AM.

By the time we part company it is raining-
an unexpected turn of the weather.

Great Show!

See it this weekend

It's brilliant today

and a lot cooler than yesterday

on Saturday I get to start at 8 instead of 6

I walked across the field yesterday morning

and it was squishy and wet

I heard the workers had to wait for it to dry to treat it

Interesting that Ridgewood News reported that the fields were closed

until they could be treated.

This lacrosse team is not a figment of my mind

?????

For Pete's sake!

If you ask in public

can you at least tell us the answer?

SOOK has been on my mind since Thursday

I go back in today for that marvelous scone

The town buzz is already very positive

I pick up a gorgeous apple turnover too

What makes Ridgewood so special is that even thought I am 54 cents short,

they still let me take the turnover,

knowing I will be back.

This trust makes me a customer for life.

As I wander through town, without a penny left in my pocket

I wonder if anyone would spot me for a cup of coffee

The Ridgewood Cafe is long gone, and I miss Micheal, God rest his soul.

He was Ridgewood fixture, kind, funny and generous

and I could always count on him for a cup of coffee.

I really miss that.

I don't think Dunkin Donuts would "loan" me a cup of coffee-

nor do I think Starbucks would either.

Ridgewood Coffee probably would, and that comforts me,

but I don't try

This is so sad. Clive Christian is gone.

this storefront was my inspiration several years ago.

I peered in the windows and admired that lovely cabinetry.

My kitchen was modeled after the Clive Christian kitchens, and I love it.

and it makes me sad to see it gone

along with the storefront and the jobs

I left town peniless, but come home richer

The Public Service right of way is packed with trucks and workers

they put down this wooden "road" so the trucks could get in

PSE&G workers are putting up new wires for the side of town that kept getting blackouts
because of the old wiring.

Any chance the controversial solar panels will go on these poles?

It would be a good location for them.

And my good fortune continues to the end of my walk.

Scads of stars are visibile in the predawn sky

there are no clouds this morning

and it is not as black out as yesterday

My ears are cold

I do not imagine this March coldness

Frost coated a discarded bottle

I have to mail out tax returns today- the 15th.

I head to The Ridgewood Post office, just remembered on a Crimes site

for the terrible tradgedy that occured here the year before we moved to town.

A disgrunteled worker shot and killed several of his co-workers.

People who were just doing their day to day job-

I remember them today too.

I was not happy when they reduced the hours of the postal workers

but it is convenient to be able to mail items at 6 AM

I really like the people who work here.

they go out of their way to help

I'm trusting you to deliver my mail

The IRS is unforgiving.

My plan was to take the train into the city today.

I missed the train

so made it back to the bus station just in time to catch the express.

I thought it would be fun to be on the same bus as my Ridgewood Ave bus-stop friends.

I get on the 164 Express... only it does not keep going down Ridgewood Ave

but turns on Maple and heads towards Glen Rock and then to Century Road

I'm in by 8

On 42nd St. I hear someone calling my name-

It's Elizabeth that I see at the bus stop at Arthur Groom's!

Perfect!

We are in NY at the same time

even though we were on different Express routes.

I end the day at the biggest, most impressive Post Office of all.

It's a full city block. I'm not sure if it is still only a Post Office.

Inscribed on the front of this building is the famous PO credo

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"

How true, especially this year!

My "scientist" was there after school yesterday into the night setting up.
It's her annual commitment

A quarter in the square

Homemade Pizza is so, so delicious. You take home the uncooked pizza and bake it for 15 minutes.
They assemble the fresh pizza while you wait and package it all up.
The toppings are wonderful, and you can choose your own combinations.
The salads are above average- I loved the one with goat cheese and pear.
Take a Homemade Pizza home to bake. You'll like it.

A crowd waits at the Pancake House- there are a lot more people just out of view.
You can't go there on a weekend and expect not to wait

Tomorrow is your birthday, and you are doing it right by celebrating all weekend long.
I'm celebrating all month long! A dear friend took me to lunch at the Village Green yesterday-
the company and food were perfection!
Friendship and food are two of the absolutely best things about Ridgewood.

Just outside the High School another kind of science is going on. Workers are using physics, gravity and engineering to get the new stadium box erected. I saw it arrive on a truck about an hour ago. It was already in place on my return. They are adding the stairs.
A crane was lowering the stairs into place and the guys were all yelling and guiding them with ropes.

The fake field sure looks real today. Nothing like a little Ho-Ho-Kus River silt on the grass.
Reminds me of Floyd.

I have been anticipating today. My first step is greeted with birdsong! The sound hits me with surprise, and I begin with a light in my heart as well as on my path. The sun brought daylight already, and it's only 6AM

The best thing about returning is finding the familiar. It's like an old friend, greeting you again. So it is with happiness I see THE RIDGEWOOD WALKER making her daily faithful way up the avenue. Her hair is a new color. It's nice.

100 years ago you did not come to the great celebration held here

dedicating this place that you gave to the town to be its first park.

You declined to have it named for you

and so it was named Linwood Park instead.

What else remains in Ridgewood from 1910, that is unchanged and so lovely?

May 6 1910

an oak, and ash and a plane were planted

as part of the dedication ceremony.

the whole town was here.

Poetry was recited, songs were sung, speeches were made.

All was fitting for such a great, great gift.

Today, 100 years later to the day,

you are remembered by all who have enjoyed the water

-the simple and simply memorable days
spent here

as swimmers and skaters

Newpaper stories and pictures of Jane Burke departing for Haiti

were taped to "Jane's chair" in January for the 8 days she was in Haiti

and the days following, until she was able to recover.
Today we heard the remarkable story

of her Medical Mission to Haiti, just days after the devastating earthquake struck.

Jane's Medical team was able to get to Haiti as first responders

because of their experiece on several previous missions.

Jane Rymer invited the 6:30 AM ers to coffee at her house

after the 6:30

The coffee cake was warm, and the coffee was perfect

It was nice to see each other outside of the pews...

Jane in her scrubs was ready to show us some of her pictures of Haiti

before she headed off to work at Hackensack Medical

It's an amazing story of courage and of extreme generosity

In her spirited and kind way Jane took us into Haiti

among the hurt, the happy, the helped,

and the workers-

who endured severe conditions

with no rest, no food, no medical supplies

except those they brought with them

Jane's Medical team formed a non-profit group

INSPIRE HAITI

raise money for medical supplies that the team will take with them

on future medical missions

It was 44 degrees and a light rain when I started

little did I know that would be the high for the day
Walking in the dark would never be my first choice
But 6 AM has its regulars
Of course I see Mike today. I have only seen him once so far without his hood puled over his head. Maddy is only a few minutes behind.
The Ridgewood Runner- sleek, swift and so in shape I will see on my way back.
These 3 are part of a great continuum that keeps going long after I stop,
only to meet me again in a new year.
It is like the promise of spring
to have these walking friends cross my path

Sherwin Williams has a new paint job!
and a new layout and decor.
they are very good in here
in all things paint related
gratefully, I do not need to visit them so often these days

I need to be at an all day seminar in NY

it throws my routine all off

but I am at the square as the sun rises

I get to see how the train people

are doing. they are coping with a mess

the coffee shop across the street has lost the morning dwadlers who could grab a cup and watch for the train. Now they can't make it across the street and up to the temporary ramp in enough time to board. The platform is considerably smaller...in fact, a good piece is still gone.

the train station is an architectural teasure

the mess is good-

it's making lots of jobs

The calm after the storm?

it's still raining slightly

At 6AM is is dark as night

because of the time change

We had no power, no lights from Saturday night until Sunday night

Now the lights are back

the town shops actually seem to have more lights on than usual

I imagine that switches were left on when the power went off

and are still on

It's a good sight to see the lights on in town

relief, for those of us with power

but still 1/2 the town has no electricity

yesterday, mass at Mt. Carmel was by candlelight
I wonder how the clock got changed
with the problems they faced all day

the morning looks like night

there was no coffee yesterday, so it's nice to see the coffee shop up and running

there are bigger matters to attend to in town today

Just don't trust the clock for now

Mike is on a delayed Saturday schedule like me
2 hours make a big difference walking
at 6 AM what you hear are birds singing
a quiet hush
and buses rumbling by
At 8 AM you hear cars.
Best time to walk is 6AM

this week it has been wonderful to wake up to light and to see the sun rise in town

the clocks spring ahead tonight and set us back to darkness again

the high school field is sopping
